Oil Revenues Propel Guyana’s 2026 Development Push

Guyana has been channeling billions of US dollars earned from offshore oil production into an ambitious development agenda focused on energy, transport infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and economic diversification. The 2026 spending plan continues this economic transformation with a clear, predictable policy direction.

Senior Minister, Office of the President, with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, said government spending plans in 2026 aim to accelerate a sweeping national transformation, partially funded by rising petroleum revenues and broader economic expansion driven by the oil sector.

The government received USD2.47 billion in 2025 from the sector, enabling an approved withdrawal of USD2.37 billion from its Natural Resource Fund. This amount will be disbursed in tranches throughout the year and is expected to fund 32% of the budget.
At the center of the 2026 development push is a Gas-to-Energy project at Wales on the West Bank of Demerara, which the government sees as a cornerstone of its industrialization strategy. The project will use natural gas from ExxonMobil Guyana’s offshore operations to fuel a new power generation and natural gas liquids facility.
