Much of the population lives on a low-lying coastal plain below sea level, relying on a fragile combination of seawalls, drainage systems, and natural barriers to keep back the Atlantic Ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mangrove forests are a vital natural defence system.<br>Kene Moseley-Boston, Project Coordinator for Mangrove Restoration and Management at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), believes protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems is a national priority.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMangrove restoration is critically important in the context of Guyana\u2019s expanding oil and gas sector because it helps ensure that economic development is balanced with environmental protection and long-term coastal resilience,\u201d she said.
