In a decisive move towards sustainable development, the Government of Guyana has launched a state-of-the-art solar farm on Wakenaam Island, Region Three—an initiative poised to redefine its energy landscape and catalyze economic growth.
The facility is expected to surpass the island’s energy needs.
Commissioned on June 27 by Prime Minister Mark Phillips, the Wakenaam solar farm is a blueprint for energy resilience and industrial advancement. With a peak capacity of 750 kilowatts (kWp), the facility integrates advanced photovoltaic modules, intelligent inverters, and robust battery storage. This hybrid system seamlessly complements the island’s existing diesel generation plant, ensuring stable, reliable, and greener power.
Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL), the national utility company responsible for generating energy spearheaded the project. Backed by a US$2.3 million investment from the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund—a $50 million initiative spearheaded by the United Arab Emirates—the project underscores Guyana’s commitment to international partnerships and innovative funding models in the clean energy sector.
Unlocking New Opportunities
Prime Minister Phillips emphasized the transformative potential of the project, highlighting its capacity to generate surplus power and attract new investment. “Agriculture is a big thing…I see the potential for tourism…for small-scale industries to utilize the power that is provided here,” he remarked. The government expects the surplus power to expand economic opportunities, empower local entrepreneurs and enhance residents’ quality of life.
This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to extend renewable energy access to every major community across Guyana, aligning with the nation’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030. The goal: a stable, sustainable, and inclusive energy future powered by a balanced mix of solar, hydro, gas, and wind.
A Smarter, Greener Grid
Kesh Nandlall, Leader of Executive Management at Guyana Power and Light (GPL), reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transforming Guyana’s energy landscape by embracing green power sources. He noted that the Wakenaam solar farm is one of a series of similar GPL projects as the company fulfills its commitment to expanding its renewable portfolio innovatively, and building a smarter, stronger, and more inclusive power grid.
Scaling Up
The momentum doesn’t stop at Wakenaam. Prime Minister Phillips announced the imminent commissioning of another solar farm on Leguan Island, signaling the government’s resolve to replicate this success nationwide. These projects are setting the stage for Guyana to achieve energy security and position itself as a net exporter of renewable power.
For decision-makers seeking to harness the power of renewable energy, Guyana’s approach offers a compelling model: invest strategically, partner globally, and empower communities for lasting impact.
